Board of Elders

"In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word." - Acts 6:1-4

Therefore, in accord with Biblical precedent and Christian freedom and love, the constitution and bylaws of St. John describe the duties of the Board of Elders in this place:

  • To assist the Pastor in all matters pertaining to the spiritual welfare of the Congregation
  • To supervise Christian discipline in the Congregation according to Matthew 18:15-17
  • Make every effort to induce members who have been negligent in their attendance at worship, in the use of the Sacraments, and in their financial support of the church, to mend their sinful ways and fully enjoy the rights and privileges of membership
  • See to it that all worship services be conducted in an orderly manner and commanded by our Lord (1 Corinthians 14:40)
  • Be an example of Christian conduct and conversation, according to our Lord's command (1 Timothy 3:8-13)
